Week #5: Go toward the light

It’s almost harvest time! and I say that with some forced enthusiasm. It’s almost sad to see the end of the road with these plants. I did not expect to genuinely care for the spinach and it’s pretty embarrasing how much, evidenced by the fact that I still didn’t remove the plant that went down last week. And I’m pleased to report that it’s back from the dead! New leaves have sprouted and the plant looks healthy again.

Unfortunately, the plant that wasn’t doing too well last week hasn’t shown too many signs of a recovery. It’s leaves are still smaller and it’s root system is very scarce.

The rest of them are getting so tall they are touching the LED tubes above them. They’ve almost formed a canopy over the setup, restricting how much light is reaching the new leaves. I doubt there’s a more obvious sign that I need to start harvesting my spinach. I’d like to wait a bit and maximize the amount of leaves I can get because I plan to get rid of the spinach and start growing baby carrots in the same setup and hopefully put together a bigger, more precise system elsewhere in the coming weeks.

If all goes well, in a weeks time I will have “Palak Paneer” (Cottage cheese with spinach. It’s a pretty popular dish in the north of India) for dinner.
